Summer’s golden encore along the Mississippi — free riverfront concerts, a 21st-year Irish festival, Saturday-night short-track racing, farmers markets under the bluffs, and one last folk weekend before the season turns.
By August, La Crosse settles into the best kind of slow. The bluffs go hazy gold in the evening, the river is warm, and the calendar fills with one last run of festivals, markets and lawn-chair concerts. Here’s how to make the most of the final stretch of summer in the Coulee Region.

Moon Tunes at Riverside Park
The region’s favorite free concert series celebrates its 15th season with lawn-chair-and-cooler nights at the Riverside Park bandshell. August lineup: Aug. 6 (Celtic / Irishfest night), Aug. 13 (Motown tribute by LB & The Hi-Volts with Fayme Rochelle & The Waxwings), Aug. 20 (DoubleTake with Saner & Gibbons), and the season finale Aug. 27 (The Remainders with Phoenix).

Historic Cameron Park (4th & King) fills with local growers, makers, prepared food and drinks, live music, a family zone and morning fitness. August Sundays: the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th.

The farmer-run market’s home base at the Hmong Cultural & Community Center (1815 Ward Ave.) — just-picked produce, local meats, cheeses, baked goods and artisan finds. A Saturday market also runs on the city’s south side (19th & Jackson, 8 a.m.–noon).

La Crosse has been a beer town since the 1800s, and PSB (1401 St. Andrew St., in a century-old boot factory) is a fine place to close out summer on the patio. Free live music every Thursday on the Happy Hour Stage, 20-plus taps, and a guided “Brewery Tourery” on the first Saturday of the month — next up Aug. 1.

Drive or hike up to Grandad Bluff for the postcard view — nearly 600 feet above downtown, with the Mississippi, three states and the whole valley spread out in the late-summer haze. Round out an easy day outside with the Hixon Forest trails, the La Crosse River Marsh boardwalk and the free Myrick Park Zoo.

Step out of the August heat into the cool, quiet nave of downtown’s neo-Gothic mother church of the Diocese of La Crosse (530 Main St.) — soaring stone, stained glass and a celebrated pipe organ. Visitors are welcome to sit and take it in; group tours can be arranged by calling the parish office (608-782-0322) about a week ahead. Weekend Mass: Sat. 4:30 p.m., Sun. 7:30 & 10 a.m.

Saturday-Night Racing at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway
The Coulee Region’s NASCAR-sanctioned short track roars all month on its 5/8-mile oval. August cards: Aug. 1 — Auto Value Trailer Race of Destruction; Aug. 8 — Coulee Tire Kids Night; Aug. 15 — American Dew Double-Feature Showdown; and a Thursday twist Aug. 20 — Thursday Night Street Drags (7:30 p.m.).

Summer-collegiate Northwoods League baseball winds down its regular season in early August at Copeland Park (1130 Copeland Park Dr.). Catch the last home games of the year before the Aug. 8 regular-season finale — and if the Loggers punch their ticket, division-final action Aug. 12 and the league championship Aug. 13. The nationwide block-party night comes to La Crosse with free, family-friendly gatherings hosted by the La Crosse Police Department across neighborhoods — food, public-safety displays and a chance to meet the folks who serve the community. Summer’s last bell: the School District of La Crosse opens the 2026–27 year in late August (the district uses an early-start calendar). Check the official district calendar for the confirmed first day, bus routes and start times before the backpacks come out.

Summer signs off with a half-century milestone: since 1976, the Great River Folk Festival has filled Riverside Park with folk and Americana music, a juried artisan-craft fair, a songwriters’ contest, workshops, kids’ activities and local food and beer. Weekend and day passes run about $10–$25.
